HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Pikeville handles Harlan to reach quarterfinals

Pikeville jumped out to a big lead in the opening quarter and the Lady Panthers went on to defeat Harlan, 61-41, in the opening round of the All “A” Classic state tournament matchup played at Corbin Arena late Wednesday night.

Pikeville, now 14-2, advances to the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon and will face Crittenden County, which edged Lexington Christian.

Trinity Rowe led four players in double-figure scoring with a game-high 21 points. Leighan Jackson and Kristen Whited followed with 11 each while Kyera Thornsbury added 10 points and 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Pikeville tops Martin County in All ‘A’ title game

Pikeville took an early lead against Martin County and held it throughout as the Panthers captured the boys’ 15th Region All “A” Classic tournament championship with a 73-62 win at Appalachian Wireless Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Charlie Fitzer finished with a game-high 27 points for the Panthers (10-3) in the win over the defending champs. Eli Johnson added 13 and Heath Jarrell tallied 12.

Luke Hale and Jacob Strugill scored 17 each and Peyton Davis tallied 13 points for the Cardinals, who dropped to 10-8.
